Here in New York, it is officially chilly outside. You can see your breath. This makes us happy because it finally feels like winter.

Savor winter and help prevent climate change: conserve energy by turning off the lights, opening a bottle of inky red wine and cuddling up with someone you love. If you prefer to do it with the lights on, replace your incandescent bulbs with energy saving compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL).

Cool factoid: according to Environmental Defense, if every household in America changed three bulbs to CFL, it would be the equivalent of taking 3.5 million cars off the road.

A man with a passion

Marolo. Grappa di Moscato.
Italy > Piedmont. 375 ml. $33

Made by artisan Paolo Marolo in his family-owned distillery, this grappa gets its distinct flavor from the pomace of Moscato d'Asti, the classic Italian fizzy wine. You can taste the craftsmanship here: clean aromas of fruit and sage, intense flavors of grape and peach balanced by warm alcohol. Sip this after a meal to heat yourself from the inside. In Italy, no meal is complete without grappa, thought to aid digestion (hence, the name "digestivo").

From a boutique winery in Napa Valley, this wine is ripe and sultry. Just right for taking the chill off. The Venge family dedicated this luscious Zinfandel blend to the memory of their yellow Labrador Scout, rescued from a Napa shelter. Churchill's. Vintage Port 1997. Portugal > Douro. $78

When the plates have been cleared, break out the vintage port.
It's dense and chewy, giving off whiffs of berries and pepper. It tastes of intensely ripe fruit. This 1997 is drinking beautifully right now, but will get better and better over the next 15 years. Treat yourself on a cold winter's evening: you will melt with contentment and feel at one with the world.

Sex For Dummies®. Bottlerocket invites lovers of wine, and lovers, to join Dr. Ruth in a frank discussion. Wines will be opened for tasting. Free. Reservations not required.

Bottlerocket launches our Winter "Explore Wine" classes on March 6.

Explore Wine: Four Week Introductory Series. $160
A practical, fun, utilitarian workshop to familiarize you with the major types and styles of wine. You will learn how wine is made, how to taste and evaluate wine, and ultimately what you like personally. Our goal is to provide you with the information and experience to make you comfortable, confident consumers.

•	March 6 – Explore the Major Varieties Know the noble and notable wines of the world and a bit of history.
•	March 13 – Explore Old vs. New World Learn how a region, grape grower and wine maker can influence the final product.
•	March 20 – Explore White Dig deeper into the huge variety of white wines.
•	March 27 – Explore Red Taste through the world of red wine. Conclude with practical advice on continuing the adventure.

Classes start promptly at 6:30 and end at 7:30pm. Only 20 lucky participants can be accommodated, first come, first serve. Full payment in advance required and no refunds possible.
