Thrift is the watchword. Each year, we like to point you to restaurants around the city that allow you to bring your own booze. A few charge a corkage fee (meaning you pay for the privilege of bringing your own), but many don't. Buy a $30 wine at Bottlerocket to have with your meal. Pat yourself on the back for saving 2 or 3 times that amount (given restaurant mark-ups). This BYOB list lets you add others you've discovered. Cool.

Three “old world” reds for under $20. One is made in a modern style. Another continues a family tradition of excellence. And the third, made from organically grown grapes, earned the distinction of being named one of this year's top 100 wines of Bordeaux.
Fattoria di Bibbiani. Chianti "Poggio Vignoso" 2007. Italy > Tuscany >>Chianti. Red. $12 The historical Bibbiani estate has been growing grapes for 13 centuries. Under the direction of Luigi Donato, whose family has owned the estate for 150 years, the focus is on making traditional wines that truly represent the region. An accomplished gardener and Professor Emeritus, here's a classic wine from a Renaissance man.
Bodegas Luzon. Luzon 2006 Over 60% of the Jumilla appellation was devastated by the phylloxera louse in 1989. Historically known for producing dark, tannic, full-bodied wines, replanting has ushered in a fresh perspective, with an experimental approach to vineyard management and winemaking. To new beginnings!
Château Couronneau. Bordeaux Supérieur 2006 Set on a Bordeaux hilltop, with arrow slits and corner towers, Château Couronneau was built in the 1400's as protection against the advancing British enemy. The winery buildings have been in use since 1620. With all that history, current owners the Piats also subscribe to an older methodology: being fully organic in their vineyards and production. C'est classique! Winner of 2009 "Today's Bordeaux" 100 Top Bordeaux, selected by an independent jury in a blind tasting of 350 wines.
