NY Times Design Fall 2006

In a New York Times Magazine article this month about fun and modern wine labels, Bottlerocket caught writer Susan Fair's eye for its selection of good-looking and good tasting bottles. Drop by to find your favorite labels, and while you're at it, check out the latest additions to our Market Fresh display island at the store, now filled with new recipes and many ideas for food and wine pairings.

Three Thieves. Chardonnay (Unoaked) 2005.
U.S.A. > California. 1 L. Jug, $12

If you've been in the store, you know that we love the Three Thieves gang and their hilariously packaged wines. This unoaked Chardonnay in a moonshine-style jug is a shockingly good value. Crisp, fruity and full of flavor. It was named by Wine & Spirits magazine as the "Best Jug Wine." Do you think they had a lot of competition? If you're having a casual party, a pot-luck event, or just want to stock up with an everyday wine, this is a great bet.

Vines were first planted in Bandol by the Romans over 2,500 years ago! This blend of Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Grenache grapes is a medium-bodied red with a plummy, meaty, spicy character. Delicious with slow-cooked lamb and roast pork. Also a good pairing with duck. We opened a bottle for an in-store tasting and it got raves from our visitors.

U.S.A > California >> Napa Valley. $55

Named one of the top ten wines of 2005 by the San Francisco Chronicle. Duckhorn has been a benchmark producer (and much sought after) since 1976. Deeper and more complex than most Merlots, this one packs a punch of black cherry, a dash of cocoa, and a host of interesting flavors. It's allocated. We've got a bit of it. Grab it while it lasts.

Eclectic Salon: Jancis Robinson
Come meet one of the world's leading authorities on wine, Jancis Robinson, as she spends an evening at Bottlerocket to celebrate her latest book, The Oxford Companion to Wine. Among her many accomplishments, Jancis Robinson is the Financial Times wine columnist, a Master of Wine, a two-time James Beard Award winner and, according to France's Le Figaro, "the undisputed mistress of the kingdom of wine." Eclectic Salon: Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page
James Beard Award-winning writers Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page will swing by Bottlerocket to share their new book, What to Drink with What you Eat. Flummoxed by the whole pairing mystery? Wish you had a smart, one-stop guide for making the best food/drink match? Come meet these food and wine experts while you taste a selection of Bottlerocket's wines. Book-Signing and Wine Tasting. Sunday, October 29, 2 – 6 pm
Open House: Candy, Wine & Spirits Tasting
Could be spooky. What goes with Hershey's kisses, caramel and candy corn? Bring the whole family to Bottlerocket for our all-ages, all afternoon tasting event. Led by Kara Newman, food and spirits writer and resident "wine witch." Kara writes for publications such as Wine Enthusiast, The New York Times, Gourmet Magazine, and New York Magazine's online "Bar Buzz" column. Kids are welcome; costumes optional. Candy will be available for all, and free wine and spirits pairings for the 21-and-over set. Free. Reservations not required.

Eclectic Salon: Christine Vachon
Independent movie producer Christine Vachon discusses her brand new book, A Killer Life. Bottlerocket will pour wines while Christine shares this part memoir/part how-to guide about making movies. A wine lover herself, Christine has produced more than 45 films including Far From Heaven, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Kids and the Oscar winning Boys Don't Cry. Christine tells her story with wit and passion, reporting from the front lines of the film industry. Book-Signing and Wine Tasting. Free. Reservations not required.

Eclectic Salon: Jay McInerney
"Shamelessly provocative," is how wine critic Robert M. Parker, Jr. describes author Jay McInerney. In addition to being an acclaimed novelist, Jay McInerney is also the House & Garden magazine wine columnist and author of a previous book of wine writings, Bacchus & Me. Come hear Jay McInerney read from his just-published collection, A Hedonist in the Cellar, while Bottlerocket opens a few bottles for your pleasure. Book-Signing and Wine Tasting. Free. Eclectic Salon: James Waller and Ramona Ponce
If you're going to drink, shouldn't you have a little something to eat, too? Join authors James Waller and Ramona Ponce, presenting Drinkology EATS: A Guide to Bar Food and Cocktail Parties. Bottlerocket will serve mulled wine and homemade snacks while the authors dispense witty advice about what foods best complement your favorite beverages, along with practical tips on how to throw a great party.
